Over the last week of August, twenty teams of Venture Scouts from all over Ireland, including three ventures from 2nd Monaghan Scout Group took up the Venture Scout Challenge2011, which took place this year in the west of Ireland.
Each team of two Venture Scouts had to carry all their camping gear, cooking equipment, clothes and provisions and complete the task of walking 100km over five days.
Each two person team were dropped at separate undisclosed locations with a limited budget of €50 between them, to survive on for the five days and nights on the road.
The teams had to plan their own route to ensure that they covered the distance each day and complete a number of prescribed challenges designed to enable them experience “real Ireland”. Each participant also had two “personal” challenges to complete on the expedition.
The teams also had to seek accommodation from the locals en route each night, 2nd Monaghan Ventures are much appreciative of the hospitality they received from the people they encountered in Galway, Limerick and Clare during the course of their challenge. Although the weather was not very favourable for them (it rained continually three out of the five days).
Our three ventures successfully completed all their set challenges and covered the distance of 100km and a few extra km, just to be sure! Only fourteen teams out of the twenty starting completed challenge 2011 this year. They were awarded the highly sought after Scouting Ireland Challenge Woggle, certificate and badge presented to them by expedition leader Pat Keegan. Congratulations and well done to Kevin Murray, Eric Brennan, James McCarron.
